I remember vividly when the book I Kissed Dating Goodbye came out. The best seller by Joshua Harris was recently back in the spotlight when Harris announced on social media that he separated from his wife and left the Christian faith. My parents, like many other Christian leaders and parents at that time, came of age in the sexual revolution. They were personally impacted by the dramatic cultural changes that came as their generation denounced previously accepted sexual values such as saving sex for marriage, marital fidelity, and sexual self-restraint. As they came to faith and later went on to become parents and leaders in Christian ministry, one of their main goals was to create a church environment that modeled an alternative lifestyle to the increasing promiscuity in secular culture, with the hopes of protecting the next generation from making the same relational mistakes that they made. For many, this took shape through teachings on the importance of sexual purity, home and private faith-based schooling, and the elimination of dating in church youth groups. The explanation was that dating was a slippery slope that led to premature emotional, physical, and spiritual intimacy that would compromise personal holiness and weaken Christian commitment. In theory, if Christian youth were kept from dating until they were old enough to consider marriage, then it would minimize the opportunity for sexual mistakes and relational breakdown and pave the way for them to arrive at their wedding day spiritually, emotionally, and sexually whole.

Williams, 30, is the founder of Journey to Purity, a nonprofit in Virginia that aims to promote celibacy in women through education and community building efforts. The Journey to Purity Meetup group has members, and is limited to women. Williams says the majority of the women are black or Latina. Many church-goers have sex, but no one wants to talk about it. The increasing number of unwed teenage mothers wheeling their little ones down the aisles confirms this. For the record, God very much sanctions sex within the holy union of marriage. However, engaging in sexual activity outside of marriage only brings confusion, guilt and a whole host of negative consequences when a spiritual bond becomes carnal and must be broken. Whenever you have sex with someone, married or not, you create a spiritual bond with that person.
Christian Dating Myth #1: “God has one woman and one man picked out for you to marry. You are destined to be with that one person, and God.
Godly unmarried sexuality is more than a call to abstain from sexual activity. Christ offers treasures to all who seek to live in a way that is pleasing to God as image bearers who are also sexual beings, including the unmarried. Be pure! Hands off! To a degree, these words ring true. Chastity is sexually lived out in a pure way; it is a commitment to keep sex in its proper place. For the unmarried person, this means a life of purity through abstinence. For the married person, it means a life of purity through faithfulness.
However, there is a profound reality of what godly unmarried sexuality is not. It is not merely about what we are doing or not doing with our genitals! Sadly, sexuality is often reduced to a definition along these lines, but it is crucial to have a fuller understanding of it while also being honest that we are embodied souls. To be an embodied soul means we are image bearers that live on earth in bodies which are created with the capacity for sexual expression.
Sexuality involves our whole being—body and soul—and refers to how we experience and express ourselves as sexual beings. Godly sexuality is something that is pleasing to God, acknowledging the value of God as the giver of sex, while keeping Christ central.

A few years ago the Ramsey Colloquium—a group of Christian and Jewish scholars—published a sharp critique of “the gay and lesbian cause” which they titled “The Homosexual Movement. It hardly needs to be said that entering the debate in this way exposed the Ramsey Colloquium to angry denunciation and was, for some of its members, an act of courage. My purpose is not to criticize the declaration’s reasoning but to draw your attention to one paragraph as the starting point for our conversation:.
This is a profoundly counter-cultural vision of human sexuality and one that can be helpful as we struggle with the moral question that is before us: should the church affirm faithful relationships between same-sex partners?
