When the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was put into place, credit card holders were supposed to benefit from the new regulation. Consumers would receive new notifications for rate fee increases, statements would inform consumers on how long it would take to pay off balances, and credit issuers were required to mail bills at least 21 days before the due date.
Now that some time has passed since the Dodd-Frank Act, consumers are still struggling with all time high levels of credit card debt and the fine print coming from credit card companies are smaller than ever. Credit card companies are businesses. We all know this. Yet, it is only when we open our statements to see extra charges and fees that we get into a fit of rage with a customer service person that really is less than interested in our diatribe on the phone.

The wood-panelled tailgate of the Oldsmobile station wagon dangled open like a broken jaw, making a wobbly bench on which four kids could sit, eight legs swinging. We knew each Doberman and every debt. The Worcester Sunday Telegram was founded in , when a telegram meant something fast. Two years later, it became a daily. It was never a great paper but it was always a pretty good paper: useful, gossipy, and resolute.
It cultivated talent. The poet Stanley Kunitz was a staff writer for the Telegram in the nineteen-twenties. Its pages rolled off giant, thrumming presses in a four-story building that overlooked City Hall the way every city paper used to look out over every city hall, the Bat-Signal over Gotham. In a newer trend, so did about a quarter of digital-native news sites.
BuzzFeed News laid off a hundred people in ; speculation is that BuzzFeed is trying to dump it. A good short story is hard to beat — but harder to write. As in most fiction, the characters should be compelling, the setting should be clear and there should be some conflict or jeopardy. Plot, in the context of short stories is less important than mood, which should dominate clearly and consistently. One of the reasons why there is such an appetite for this type of fiction is that they are almost always easily devoured in one sitting. They require intense bursts of attention and reward readers handsomely with plenty to think about.

Books on race and systemic racism. As of Friday, 15 of the top 20 bestselling books on Amazon were about race or racism. Earlier this week, Code Switch was number one on Apple Podcasts — which, as host Gene Demby said , is “dope,” but unfortunately occurred under “soul-crushing circumstances. We’re in the middle of one of those awfully predictable news cycles — a video of police killing a black person goes viral, protests ensue and broader America suddenly realizes we need to talk about race.
Of course, while this week has happened before, it’s also happening on a much larger scale than ever before, with demonstrations in all 50 states. To help people be better allies, lists of antiracist books, films and podcasts are being published in droves. There’s never a bad time to learn, but such a list can become erroneously prescriptive, a balm to centuries-old lacerations that cut deeper than the individual reader. As Lauren Michele Jackson wrote for Vulture, “The word [anti-racism] and its nominal equivalent, “anti-racist,” suggests something of a vanity project, where the goal is no longer to learn more about race, power, and capital, but to spring closer to the enlightened order of the antiracist.
So, with that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of books, films and podcasts about systemic racism, acknowledging that they are just books, films and podcasts.
Every month we select a new title from one of our authors so that you can discover new stories, locations and genres for free. The selected title will appear in the Free Stories Library below. We might describe the goal of building a quiz to screen for a new open job description with this story:.
Resist it. Epic stories describe a user action and the child stories detail that action. Test cases and notes are a place to add further details and points to discuss relative to individual stories. Both types of stories have the same format- the format you saw above. My general advice is to keep them relatively small. Well, developing and operating software is expensive. The alternative is to just guess and I can tell you how that works out- not well.
Returning to the narrative of an HR manager who wants to create a screening quiz for a new job description, we might start with this epic:. The child stories and their test cases them decompose that epic into more detailed steps see Reference A for the full example.

Quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing are three different ways of incorporating another writer’s work into your own writing. Each differs according to the closeness of your writing to the source writing. Good writing takes time. This means that students need to set time aside to brainstorm, pre write, plan, draft, and then revise, revise, and revise. If students leave their essay to the last minute, they tend to become overwhelmed by the writing task and panic by looking for an alternative.
This alternative is usually plagiarism. Students must do everything possible to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism, a form of academic misconduct, results in failure. Plagiarism includes using the words, ideas, answers, or works of another writer without providing clear acknowledgement of the original author and accurate citation. Plagiarism in class results in failure on the plagiarized assignment and may result in failure of the course.
Students should feel comfortable browsing the internet in search of information related to their essay topic. It’s always helpful to google a topic and learn what kind of information is being distributed about that topic. It’s also an excellent brainstorming tool.
Online dating has become a common way to meet that special someone. Familiar websites, such as Plenty of Fish and Match, even have their own mobile apps to make online dating that much easier. When Tinder was released, many jumped on downloading it because of its convenience; you can date on the go. With the shallow design of the mobile app, it is understandable why there have been many dating fails for those brave enough to sign-up and start swiping. These Tinder dating fail stories are spotted across the internet.

Graphic Novels. Teachers and librarians want to record themselves reading aloud and post the video publicly for kids to watch, but is it legal? More and more teachers and librarians want to reach their students and young patrons after hours by recording themselves reading books and posting them online for students to watch from home. They are concerned, however, about copyright law. Is it legal to publicly post these recordings? Can only certain books be recorded and posted?
Storytime is a quintessential service of public and school libraries, right up there with library lending. It instills an invaluable love of reading in children and contributes to early literacy and later success at school. One would be hard pressed to find a person who does not value storytime. Teachers and librarians asking if storytime is an infringement of copyright law when the reading is recorded and uploaded to YouTube or Facebook are essentially asking if the social benefits of storytime are lost once recorded and delivered by digital means.
Common sense would tell us that storytime does not become illegal when it is digital, but the legal concern is real—technically. In the online environment, copyright law does not say that user and library rights also apply to the digital environment. The copyright law was written in a different time, but Congress was prescient when including fair use which is technology-neutral.
